What’s the best iPhone deal now that iPhone 11 is here?

The new iPhone 11is here! With it comes the agonizing process of staring at your old, raggedy (possibly no more than a year old) iPhone and wondering if you should lay out the dough and upgrade your Apple device.

But before you rush to buy the iPhone 11, premium iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro Max, let's take a look at which phone can get you the best bang for your buck.

At $699, the new iPhone 11looks like a great deal right at launch. It’s $50 bucks cheaper than iPhone XR’s $749 release price — which was billed as last year’s “affordable” option when compared to the iPhone XS.

If you’re looking to save even more, Apple announced it's keeping the iPhone XR around too, at a low price of $599. Apple usually drops the previous year’s phone models by $100 each. However, this year it cut the iPhone XR by $150. (And there's no pricier iPhone X.)

The choice is a lot easier if money is no issue. You’ll probably want to go for the top-of-the-line triple camera behemoth iPhone 11 Proor its even larger sibling iPhone 11 Pro Max, starting at $999 and $1,099 respectively.

But, if you’re a bit more frugallike me, someone who has held onto his 4-year-old iPhone 6Sfor dear life (which I only bought when I did because it was the final year my carrier was offering subsidized iPhones for $200), the choice between the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR provides a real conundrum.

“The iPhone XR is a good deal,” says Mashable’s very own Appleexpert, Raymond Wong, when I asked him if it was worth saving a Benjamin and going with the XR over the iPhone 11. “But $100 more [for iPhone 11] and you get a lot more.”

Note that the retail prices mentioned are for the lowest storage option for each iPhone model.

If you’re planning on selling your old iPhone on a trade-in website in order to afford that new device, Ash Turner of the smartphone price comparison site BankMyCellrecommends doing so ASAP to lock in pre-Apple event rates, as Apple’s low iPhone 11 and iPhone XR price points have taken the resale market by surprise.

“The reduced retail prices of older models will no doubt accelerate the depreciation of iPhone resale values in the trade-in market,” Turner says. “If people are planning on purchasing a new iPhone, the smartest thing they can do is register their sale with a buyback site right now before everyone adjusts their prices. This will lock in today's trade-in value for up to 30 days, leaving ample time for them to get their new iPhone when it ships on the 20th and still have up to 20 days left to send their old at today's buyback rates.”

If you’re looking to save money and you’re up to moving to a new carrier, Turner tells me that Verizoncurrently has the best deal for new customers.

“You can get $450 off [a new iPhone] by trading in eligible devices that are worth a lot less like the iPhone 7,” Turner tells me. “Plus if you switch to Verizon Unlimited, you’ll get a $200 prepaid MasterCard totaling a $650 discount.”

Additionally, if you’re looking long-term, BankMyCell has found that Verizon devices have among the highest trade-in value of all carrier-locked phones. In fact, the resale value of an iPhone with Verizon is just as high as the value of an unlocked iPhone.

Turner says that AT&Talso currently has a good buy-one-get-one free iPhone deal and, unlike Verizon, this one’s open to its new and current customers.

“Better yet, if you don’t want an iPhone, you can get up to $750 in credit to put towards any other phone,” Turner says.

This year, Apple removed the iPhone 7 from its stores and is keeping the iPhone 8 around as its cheapest model at $449. However, if your budget is in that range, your best bet according to BankMyCell’s analysis of the reseller market, is to go with buying a used or refurbished iPhone XR or iPhone X. In fact, if you're really looking to save money and don't mind being behind the cutting edge, like my colleague Sasha Lekach points out, used iPhones are the way to go.

One iPhone model you should probably pass on (unless you get it as a hand-me-down for free; can't beat free) is my beloved iPhone 6S aka the last iPhone with a headphone jack. While the new iOS 13will support the phone, it’s the oldest model it will support. If Apple keeps with its usual way of doing things, next year’s new version of iOS will likely render the 6S obsolete.
